On September 6, 2016, the City Council approved Ordinance No. 18637 amending Chapter 4 of the City Code to add the Rental Ready Program. The goals of the program are to protect the health, safety and welfare of residents, maintain attractive and desirable neighborhoods, and ensure minimum standards for the interior of residential buildings. The proposed rental inspection program would require all residential rental units to pass a basic health/safety inspection every two years.
One of the required inspections items is carbon monoxide detectors. The original carbon monoxide language does not treat all rental units equally. Since the adoption of the rental ready program, this requirement has garnered the largest number of questions from inspectors. As there have been numerous questions about the carbon monoxide detector requirement, staff has worked with the rental ready inspectors to clarify the language of the carbon monoxide detector requirement so it would apply equally to all rental units.
