BILL NO. 18-109Ord.No:          18961

Agenda Title:

18-109 - 2R. An ordinance amending various sections of Article 7 “Electrical Code”, of Chapter 4 of the Independence City Code, and adopting the 2017 Edition of the National Electrical Code.
Executive Summary:

The 2017 National Electrical Code is a comprehensive electrical code that establishes minimum regulations for electrical systems using prescriptive and performance related provisions. It is founded on broad base principles that make possible the use of new materials and new building designs. The National Electrical Code is kept up to date through the review of proposed changes submitted by code officials, industry representatives, design professionals, and other interested parties. The electrical industry builds in conformance with National Electrical Code. This 2017 edition is fully compatible with all of the International Codes, published by the International Code Council.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) codifies the minimum requirements for the safe electrical installations in a single, standardized source.  It creates a universal electrical safety standard.  Allowing all new and renovated construction built to code to be safe from electrical hazards.  The NEC is updated every three (3) year to include the latest in proven safety technology.
Currently, the City is using the 2011 NEC.  The 2017 NEC is latest version of that code.  Staff has met regularly with an informal code advisory panel that included staff members from other municipalities in the region to review and discuss the latest codes for adoption.  These regional municipalities are also adopting the 2017 NEC.
