Agenda Title:

18-070 - 2R. An ordinance levying a tax on all real property subject to taxation on January 1, 2018, within the corporate limits of the City of Independence, Missouri, for general revenue and public health and recreation purposes, and for the Independence Square Special Business Benefit District; said levies and assessments being separate and distinct, all for the Fiscal Year commencing on the 1st day of July, 2018, and ending on the 30th day of June, 2019.

Staff recommends approval of this ordinance.
Executive Summary:


Tax levies for purposes of the Ordinance for 2018 are based on assessed valuations prior to adjustments approved by the Jackson County Board of Equalization. Since Independence is partially located in Clay County, it must file its tax levies with the County Clerks by September 1st. Jurisdictions located only in Jackson County are allowed to file their levies by October 1st.


It is recommended that the 2018 General Revenue tax levy be set at $0.4792 per $100 of assessed valuation. The Public Health & Recreation tax levy be set at $0.2257 per $100 of assessed valuation. The 2018 levies total $0.7049. The total rate for 2017 was $0.7031. 


The tax levy for the Independence Square Special Benefit District is recommended to be $0.5749 per $100 of assessed valuation.

Fiscal Impact:

The tax revenue is projected as part of the FY 2018-19 Operating Budget.
