A request for Council approval to authorize the City Manager to direct the Police Department to submit applications and participate in the 2018/2019 Hazardous Moving Violation grant as provided through the Missouri Department of Transportation, Highway Safety Division.
The Police Department recommends approval.
The Police Department continues to participate in the public safety initiative sponsored by the Missouri's Highway Safety Division within MoDOT. In the past, the grant program has provided funding to conduct public safety programs which include: DWI Enforcement (Wolf Packs), Hazardous Moving Violation, Red Light Running, Dispatch Staffing, Sobriety Checkpoints, Jackson County Sobriety Checkpoints, Youth Alcohol, Aggressive Driving on I-70 and Occupant Protection Enforcement.
The proactive enforcement and educational initiatives have demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing the violations and the serious consequences associated with this destructive behavior. This year, the Police Department is submitting grant applications for all the programs listed above.
This request is for "Hazardous Moving Violation" (Red Light Running, I-70 Aggressive Driving, HMV High Crash Roadways, Magnet Field Software License, LETSAC Training and Advanced Crash Training) with a request of $211,300.00. The grant period will be from October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019.
Receiving these grants would provide additional revenue to allow officers to pursue traffic enforcement which will aid in reducing traffic collisions.
